Folklore has it that pelican mothers are particularly attentive to their young, to the point of wounding themselves in order to nourish their chicks with their blood. There appears to be no truth to these tales, but pelicans have neverhtheless become symbols of piety and sacrifice. Thus, the Maternal Sacrifice Letterbox.

The Maternal Sacrifice Letterbox (also known as the Pious Pelican Letterbox) is a wonderful stamp which was carved by The Olde Oak and presented to Nancyanne on the occasion of her birthday. Since our beloved "Om..." stamp has gone missing, we decided to use its former hiding place, located in one of our favorite places, for this dramatic box.

To find the box, get yourself to the Point Lobos Nature Reserve on the central California coast, about 6 miles south of Monterey. The entrance fee to the Reserve is $10 and the great state of California can use every penny. Drive to the Whaler's Cove parking lot and head up the stone steps of the North Shore Trail. At the top of these steps, turn left and head up the wooden steps. When you reach the top, take the trail toward the ocean (right). Weave your way through the tree roots until you dead end, then look to your right to a wooden bench. Sitting on the right side of the bench, look over your shoulder. The letterbox is tucked into the crevice between two small boulders, located on the SE side of a large boulder just behind the bench. Please leave the box well hidden and protected from the elements...the weather gets pretty severe at times. You can spend the entire day, and more, exploring this wonderful reserve. Take a picnic! Have a great day in one of our favorite spots!
