The Solar Living Center in Hopland sits on a 12 acre site that was once a Department of Transportation dumping ground piled with rubble and debris. Now the land reverberates with the possibilities of living sustainably.
Take your time here to enjoy the plantings, the garden, the pond laced with willows and the incredible straw bale building. (at over 5000 square feet, it's maybe the largest straw bale structure in the US). If you have children in tow, the tunnels, sand area and water play area is a must.
Things have not always been quiet and harmonious here. On New Year's 2006, when all of Hopland was under water, there was 8 feet of water running across this site. While the flood was in full force, a small dome that had been lovingly constructed by interns and which contained much memorabilia was destroyed by fire. Storage sheds with tools, supplies and equipment were swept away.
Now to the letterbox. Near the highway there is a Memorial Car Grove filled with cars from the 50's and 60's which serve as planters for now very large trees. This grove was quite controversial when it was installed. In front of the NW tire of the 59 Chevy, you will find the Solar Living box
Looks like the woodrat who lives under the yurt may have made off with this one. Replanted,,, This time a little higher. Still within the 59 Chevy, but now tucked in the glove box.
