The West Olive Owl

One warm spring morning we left home for a letterbox treasure hunt with our three year old and his grandparents in tow. We arrived in Pigeon Creek Park, West Olive, Michigan. The park is beautiful and very well kept. We parked in the main parking lot on the South side of Stanton Rd. We started out of the parking lot and headed South on the trail. A very short distance and already we had a choice. Straight or right? We went right and continued down the trail towards 345. Once there we had another choice. We decided to follow the hiker since we were hiking. We followed the curvy path through all the tall Beech trees. We followed them through 4.19.05. An X on the right does not mark our spot.We kept on the path until 457 came into view-by the compass we went 250 degrees. Aways down the new trail we thought we saw something near the large 4 trunk oak, 3 live and 1 dead trunk had us looking it over. Nope, nothing was there. We kept going and finally spotted a bench, a well deserved rest. After a small break we had a decision to make, we decided to be rebels and took the only other path left that said do not enter. Three large maples lined up on the path to our left. I wonder how old these trees really are. A few steps and another maple tree started a fresh line. It was in that tree we seen our owl. My husband was investigating the spot and mentioned what a neat spot for a letterbox. He got closer and reached his arm in, and jumped back quickly with a yell. The tree had eyes. We carefully peered into the hole and there was an owl all tucked in for the day. His feathers filled the hole to the rim. We don’t know how he fit. We took our looks then quickly left him on his own. He was surely the highlight of our day! That owl was our inspiration. You can find your owl on the opposite side of the trail hidden at the base of a stump (now a falling or fallen log) tight to an older log lying on the ground at 115 degrees. Take 27 steps.
