Sylvester Joseph "Steve" Wittman (April 5, 1904 - April 27, 1995) was an air-racer and aircraft designer and builder. His Tailwind design is a popular homebuilt airplane model and is still built today.
Wittman was manager of the Oshkosh, Wisconsin airport from 1931 to 1969 - which is now named after him (Wittman Regional Airport). Wittman became involved in the newly-formed Experimental Aircraft Association in 1953 and was instrumental in bringing the EAA's annual fly-in to the Oshkosh Airport in 1970.
Locate the Wisconsin historical marker that is dedicated to Steve Wittman. It is located in front of Basler Flight Service on 20th Avenue between Delaware Street and Mc Curdy Street.
The Basler building behind the historical marker was featured in the film Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. The exterior was transformed into a 1930’s airport over a 5 day period in April 2008.
CLUES:
Reading the historical marker, find the day that the airport was named in honor of Steve Wittman. Divide that number by 2. Stand directly behind the marker and walk that number of steps to the west. Face north and find Steve's hanger.
