Eagle Scout 2012

Planted to commemorate my son’s earning the rank of Eagle Scout, March 20, 2012. He aimed high and kept his eye on the prize – a lot of hard work and years of commitment paid off. He learned to be a terrific leader, and hopes to use those skills over his last two years as a Boy Scout and into his adult life.

Locate the Brainard Hill Road trailhead for the Mattabesett Trail. The CT Walk book states that it’s in Haddam, but my gps said it was in Higganum. The trailhead is near the intersection with Oxbow Road.

Cross the dam and brook, follow the blue blazed Mattabessett trail and ascend through some fantastic mountain laurel and rocky ledges. I hope you brought the clues for the Laurel and Ledges boxes! Traverse the “pavement’ – a long flat slab of rock. The trail reaches Eagle’s Beak Point on the left after 1.1 mile. The views from here are terrific! Hopefully you’ll spot an Eagle while you’re enjoying the view. When you’re done, turn your back to the view and face the trail. Sight a four foot boulder straight ahead in the laurels. Behind it you will find a box commemorating a new Eagle.
This wonderful stamp was carved for me by Gizz, to replace the original store bought stamp. When I saw the stamps he had carved for the Laurels and Ledges boxes I pleaded with him to carve a stamp for me. Under Rubaduc's careful supervision, he created a stamp worthy of commemorating this event. We used the design for my son's Court of Honor when he got his Eagle Award.
