Buried Leaves is our family’s first letter box! During a weekend camping trip to Martin Dies Jr State Park, we found several boxes, made Brown Bears, swam in icy water, attempted to bike the mucky trails, and decided to leave our own little legacy. Hope you enjoy!
Difficulty: Easy, flat trail. Sometimes muddy after heavy rain. Bring mosquito spray.
Directions: From Houston, take US Highway 59 North about 90 miles to Livingston. Then travel east on US Highway 190 for 65 miles to Park Road 48. (You will see the entrance to the Hen House Ridge Unit on the right, just after crossing Steinhagen Lake on 190.) Please support Texas State Parks by paying appropriate fees. Upon turning onto Park Road 48, you will stop at the 1st trail on your right and park along the road. There is a “Nature Trail” sign, as well as a “Forrest Trail” sign distinguishing this one from the “Slough Trail” which is on the other side of the road.
Clues: As you walk, you’re going to count your footbridges. You will walk until you cross four. (There are a few other letterboxes along this path, so look for them as well!)
After the fourth footbridge you will come to a fork in the trail with a bench on the left side of the trail. Take the left pathway. Hike a bit further until you cross a 5th footbridge.
After this bridge, start counting paces to make sure you are on track. At 30 paces you will see a tree bending over the trail, with a large pine just behind it. You’re getting close.
Continue on and you will pass a “#1” sign on the right.
Continue ahead and you will see a Y-shaped tree in the middle of the trail and the trail will split around it. From the Y-shaped tree (and the fork), walk back about 22 paces.
On your right you will see a cluster of three trees together. One of the three is a large pine. Buried Leaves is buried under the leaves in the middle of these three trees. (Please watch out for poison ivy growing near the base of the tree.) We would love an update on the condition of our box; after stamping, please take a postcard from the box and mail it to us!
