“Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul!”

This year, 2012, marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien’s THE HOBBIT. This is the book that tells the story which is the center of his more monumental work, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Later this year, the movie will be released in two parts. To celebrate the anniversary, here is a nine-box series of two-sided hand-carved, NOT FOR TRADE, stamps which illustrate the nine riddles in Chapter 5, which I believe is the center of the center of the Trilogy.

the fifth riddle:

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

DIRECTIONS: Take RT15 to Exit 59 (If you are heading North, it is the exit right before the tunnel.) Turn right at the end of the exit and follow Whalley Ave. (RT63) for about one mile until you come to the traffic light at Fitch Street. Turn left onto Fitch Street, and follow it until you come to the pedestrian bridge for Southern CT State College which crosses over the road. Get into the left lane, and take a left onto Wintergreen Avenue. Follow Wintergreen until you see signs for WEST ROCK RIDGE STATE PARK. Follow those signs shifting back and forth between Springside and Wintergreen Avenues, until you pass the closed gate for the state park on your left. Drive past the entrance just a little, and you will come to the West Rock Nature Center, and plenty of parking.

CLUES: There are many kings who are killed in Tolkien's books. Thorin, Dwarf King Under the Mountain meets his end in THE HOBBIT. The Dark Lord of Mordor is dealt a serious setback, prior to this, by Isildur, King of Gondor when the Great Ring of Power is cut from his hand. But King Isildur, himself, is vanquished by the power of the ring which comes to be known as Isildur's Bane. The fifth RIDDLES BOX is hidden on the REGICIDES TRAIL SYSTEM.

Cross the street, and walk through the abandoned parking lot of the State Park until you come to a paved road leading up the hill to the right. The wide trail to the left leads to Judges' Cave (There is a sign. But nothing good ever comes to hobbits who shelter in caves! Actually, there is a lot of history associated with Judges' Cave, and is worth a visit.)The paved road to the right is Old Baldwin Avenue. Follow Baldwin Avenue up the hill, and through one turn until you see the stone (ventilation) tower on your right and the metal railing along the road to your left. (You might have to look carefully through the leafed-out trees to see the tower.) As you make the second turn, look on the railing to find the two green blazes.

Jump the rail, and descend a little on the green trail, which turns to the right. Come to the intersection with the Light Blue Trail.(8.16.13, There is a lot of storm damage here. But the box is still intact.) But do not take either of them. Go down the notch that is formed between the two hills.DON'T GO TOO FAR; DON'T GO ALL THE WAY TO THE MOUTH OF THE TUNNEL. If you look through the trees, you might come upon a view of RT15 as it enters the West Side of the tunnel. Yes, you have been so dazzled by the view that you forgot that you are standing directly over the tunnel through the mountain. Dragons' lairs have a way of dazzling you like that. Look up the hill to the left and you will see a very twisted and crooked tree. Climb up to it, look to the left in a shallow cave, and you will find the fifth RIDDLES BOX hidden behind a few rocks. There is a special metallic ink for stamping. But no logbook. PLEASE SNAP THE INK PAD CLOSED TIGHTLY. Please hide it well, after you have stamped in. If you have the time, follow the light blue trail for more views. The smoke coming from the tunnel might suggest that Smaug is still at home!
