*** Part of Old Forts of Texas Series ***

***** Reported Missing - Not confirmed ***********

The Camp Van Camp box is located near the original location of this frontier fort. Here is the history from the Handbook of Texas:
CAMP VAN CAMP. Camp Van Camp, near the site of present Newcastle in central Young County, was a United States military outpost of Fort Belknap. It was established on April 30, 1859, and named in memory of Lt. Cornelius Van Camp, a topographical officer in Earl Van Dorn's expedition. Van Camp was killed in a battle at Wichita Village, Indian Territory, on October 1, 1858. The camp was abandoned on August 28, 1859. In 1936 the Texas Centennial Commission placed a marker at the site.

The above mentioned marker is for Fort Belknap, with no mention of Camp Van Camp, but box is located here where camp probably was close to.

Directions:
From Newcastle, go south on Hwy 380 to Hwy 61, and pull in on right side into roadside park across form Hwy 61 to the historical granite marker.

To the Microbox:
Read the marker, then go to back side base. Box is on base, under rock.
