This box is dedicated to Elizabeth (Burdie) Grashorn, who was born in 1902 in Elkhart Lake, WI, and lived there in the same house until she passed away in 1999. If you take a stroll down Lake Street, keep your eyes open for a picture window with “Burdie’s Nest” etched in the glass.

Burdie and her family played a role in making Elkhart Lake the resort town it is today, earning wages at the Schwartz and (original) Osthoff Hotels.

Burdie loved the outdoors, so this box is located on a portion of the Ice Age Trail southeast of town.

Park in the small lot on County Hwy. A, just east of Little Elkhart Lake Road. Follow the marked trail through the grassy field into the young Pines. You will come to a bench at the top of a hill. Make your way down the hill, and just before you reach the bottom, stop at the trail marker on your left. Take 25 paces in a southeasterly direction to a large Oak tree. Here, beneath three boulders, you will find Burdie’s box.

Please secure with the rocks before you depart.

We look forward to your updates!
