Gray whales travel from their summer feeding grounds in the North Pacific and Bering Seas to their winter breeding grounds in the lagoons of Baja, Ca, a round trip of up to 12,000 miles. They travel 60-100 miles a day and the trip takes about 3 months.
Here in Mendocino, the first south bound whales can been seen as early as December and stragglers on their way north have been seen as late as May.
A good whale viewing site is the observation platform at Laguna Point in MacKerricher State Park, north of Ft. Bragg. Even when whales are not present there are usually seals and sea lions and numerous shore birds. The day we planted the letterbox, there was a flock of black oystercatchers on nearby rocks and seals poking their noses up through the waves.

To find the box, follow the boardwalk out to the observation deck and enjoy the view. The south side of the deck has information regarding the whale migration. When you are saturated with the sea and ready to depart, begin at the end of the north handrail counting the bolts in the edging of the boardwalk. At the 46th bolt, look under the boardwalk, on the beam just west of the 46th bolt behind the joist.
There can be a lot of traffic here, good luck in being discrete.
Enjoy this beautiful place.
