*** 03-03-2012 I have a report that the letterbox may have slid through the hole in the cinderblock and fallen into the netherworld beneath. It might be missing. It might be excavate-able. But I can't say for sure. ***

I had hoped to plant a couple of boxes in the Disney parks during our recent vacation there. The parks, however, are well-manicured and tended to by an army of landscapers whose sole mission is to keep the place absolutely trash (and letterbox) free. Add in thousands of people at every turn and the area isn't exactly a very survivable spot for a letterbox.

Finally I settled on a location just outside of Epcot's boundaries. This box is located in a cinderblock on the grounds of the Disney Beach Club. I'm almost 100% certain that this is the ONLY unused cinderblock anywhere in Disney World. :) The most likely way to get to this box is during a visit to Epcot, but you can also get to the box via walkways, buses and boats from a number of resorts, including the Swan and Dolphin, Disney Boardwalk, Hollywood Studios, etc. If you're staying at the Beach or Yacht Clubs, this will be a piece of cake. Note that it might be difficult to get to this box WITHOUT either staying at these resorts or visiting Epcot.

The theme for this box is an underrated character that appears in a Disney movie. Maybe you'll recognize him?

Finding this box requires you to leave Epcot Center on foot. You should be able to locate the box and return to Epcot in about 15-20 minutes. The box is located on resort property. No one will care if you walk through the resort (no one will ask, but if they do, just say you were hoping to eat at the Cape May Cafe - or maybe that you wanted to check the resort out so that you could stay there next time), but you should keep your eyes peeled for the resort's security team, who aren't particularly keen on people poking around in their bushes (I should know - haha). They drive small white jeeps with lights on top, and frequently travel the road near the box location as their main base is located just to the south. I would suggest thinking up an excuse for why you're poking around in the bushes before you do it. Helpful suggestions: "I'm chasing a rabbit!" or "Just looking for a place to vomit!" or "I thought I saw one of those stupid pins that everyone collects back there on the ground!" Just smile and act dumb and they'll leave you alone.

The clues: Leave Epcot through the International Gateway entrance near pretend-France. Walk past the boat dockery on your left and continue on over the bridge. Keep going west - the beach will be to your left. Take a right turn (north) and head towards the main lobby of the Disney Beach Club. If you've walked to the shipwreck waterslide you've gone too far (also note that you cannot enter the resort's pool area without a valid resort ID). Walk directly across the lobby of the hotel, exiting through the resort's front entrance. You should see a large circular valet circle where buses, taxis and cars can drop people off at the resort. Walk across this valet circle (or use the sidewalks around it if there is a lot of vehicular traffic). Continue mostly north, crossing the canal on a bridge with four white gabled shelters. Before you head into the parking lot you will come to a stop sign and a sign that says "Guest check-in." Turn right here, following the sidewalk east along the bottom of the parking lot and along a low hedge. Soon you will pass by the edge of a building. This is the Beach Club Villas, marked with signs that say "Disney Vacation Club." Skip the sidewalk near those signs, and continue on to the north-eastern corner of the building where there is another sidewalk. Turn right onto that sidewalk, walking between the villas on your right and the canal on your left. Soon you will come to a Y in the sidewalks. Go left (this is the main path). About twenty steps here will bring you to a street. Turn left. Another twenty four steps or so will bring you to the box location. The box is hidden behind the low wall on your left. A two-holed cinderblock lies partially covered with dirt and debris about 2-3 feet back along the wall. Reeeeeeach back in there, past a hinged electrical box of some sort near the sidewalk and the box should be in the hole in the block closest to you.

When you're done, please cover the cinderblock hole back up with debris. I would appreciate any updates on this box as I'm not likely to ever return to it!
