Beebe Hill State Forest

Beebe Hill Fire Tower More on NYS Fire Towers Printer-friendly Clues
This is one cool spot, especially if you climb the fire tower. The view is PHENOMENAL.
Directions to Beebe Hill:
There's pretty easy access from the NYS thruway. Take exit B3 on I-90, just over the line in NY from MA. Head South on Rt 22. Turn Right on Middle Rd. Stay straight on this until it ends on Fog Hill Rd (It crosses it once before ending at it). Turn Left onto Fog Hill. This will take you to Rt 5 (Osmer Rd) - a main rd again. Turn Left and you will see a pull-off/dirt rd on your right. This is where you should park. If you pass the pond (Barrett Pond) heading south on 5 you went too far. (If coming from S or W in Columbia Co. Head to Austerlitz and go north on 22. Rt 5 turns off to your left a little ways past Rt 203. Look for the pond on your left after you see the signs for Beebe Hill State Forest and the parking is just beyond this on the same side.)
Directions to box:
Follow the dirt access road along the edge of Barrett Pond. Look for the trail markers the color of rubies and follow this trail off the road to the side away from the pond and to higher ground. As you hike, watch for a man-made border/barrier running N-S crossing the trail. Just beyond this is a large moss covered monolith off the SW side of the trail - go to the side opposite the trail and you will find a fallen tree. Approximately 6 paces SW of this rock you will see a tall tree with some mossy rocks at its base. Look under the rocks at the east foot of this tree. Please be careful - they look like they've been undisturbed there for a long time and I'd like to keep them that way.
The hike is steep in spots but the footing is generally good. You can either take the trail up the hill or follow the road to the top but the box is on the trail. It should be pretty easy to find the features in the clues on the way down the trail if you elect to go up the road. At the top of the hill - just under a mile up and you're climbing close to 1000 ft I think - is an open area with a boarded up house and the fire tower (I'll let you decide about the safety/legality of climbing up).
One thing you might notice near the parking lot is a small family cemetery near the parking area. It's pretty interesting.
