The Independent Order of Odd Fellows erected this building in the early 1900’s as a meeting place. The organization came into being during the 18th century in England and founded in American in 1819. “The Lodge degrees and activities aim to improve and elevate every person to a higher, nobler plane; to extend sympathy and aid to those in need, making their burdens lighter, relieving the darkness of despair; to war against vice in every form, and to be a great moral power and influence for the good of humanity.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_Order_of_Odd_Fellows It was used by the Odd Fellows up until 1946 when it was sold to the town.Ttown offices of Madison were moved here from the building currently used as the Historical Society. It has also been host for many town and community events such as annual town meetings and voting, church suppers, school assemblies, dances, youth group meeting, weddings and other family celebrations.

On August 22, 1999, Rte 113 was closed all day between the head of the lake and Burke Field as the community gathered to witness this magnificent building propped up on a flat bed truck and moved from the fourth building lot north of the Silver Lake Train Station, .9 miles across town, over a bridge, and down a steep hill to its current resting spot. Today it is the town municipal building housing the offices for the Selectmen, Town Clerk, Tax Collector, Building Inspector and Madison Police. Clues: Find the Madison Town Hall at 1923 Village Road. Turn into the driveway between the Fire Station and Town Hall. Look for the yellow “TAXPAYER SAND” sign on the left just behind the Fire Station. Park in the area near the sign. Stand next to the sign and face the town hall. Walk across the paved driveway towards the town hall and the single Red Pine tree (about 22 average paces). Look to the left and find a cluster of four trees. It is at the base of the thinnest tree in this cluster that you will discover what you seek.
