Clever Little Bugs

Beacon, NY
Stonykill State Environmental Center Sierra Trail
Red Schoolhouse Rd. between Rt. 9D and Rt. 52
Length: about 1 mi.

This series is for our 3rd granddaughter who recently turned 10. She is our “clever little bug”.

I’m not sure what the undergrowth will be like when the leaves come out. Hope it’s not too difficult to get to the boxes. But I’m pretty sure you’ll be glad to have insect repellant along.
The trail was pretty muddy after the rain.

Note: Check the clues to “On the way to the Old Schoolhouse” by Rabbit Relations.
They contain more details about this area and the trail.

Clues:
Follow the mown grass path beyond the kiosk straight to the Outer/Inner Loop signs then go right following yellow trail markers. Take the side path to the left, if you wish, to see the Sierra Pond board, but return to the main trail. Go onto the boardwalk and stop just before the railings begin. Look right and see some low-lying stones. In front of the largest rock and under a flattish rock is Bug #1. (I don’t know how much flooding occurs here so please be sure to seal the box carefully with no plastic from the inner bag caught in the seal and be sure
the inner baggie is sealed. Please apply the same caution to all boxes.)

Continue across the boardwalk and onto the trail looking for a large multi-trunked (8 or 9) tree on the right.
Look behind at the base of one of the trunks and under a rock for Bug #2.

Continue on passing through large cut logs.
Find a way around the fallen trees if they haven’t been cleared.
Look for a tree on the right with trail markers that has a collar of rocks at its base.
About 9 paces ahead look left for rock piles.
Look on the far side of the pile, under a rock and log for Bug #3.

Continue on the trail going up and down a gentle slope. Did you notice the star-shaped stump cut flush with the ground? At the Sierra Trailhead take the inner loop. You’ll see a stone wall on the right that you’ll
soon pass through and you’ll cross a bridge. Take about 25 paces (2 steps per pace) and you should be
beside a leaning tree, off trail a bit, on the right. There should be a fairly large tree ahead of you on the left. From the leaning tree, look 45 degrees left to a low rock pile up a small rise (or walk ahead a few more steps to the large tree and look about 90 degrees left).
Go there and look in the center of the pile under smaller rocks for Bug #4.

The trail continues on. Turn left at another Sierra Trailhead sign. Pass many stumps on both sides of the trail. Cross a small area of stones in the trail with a good-sized stump on the left and stop. Also there is a large tree leaning away from the trail with a downed tree behind it. Look under sticks and stone at the V made by
large splinters from the downed tree. Here lies Bug #5.

Continue on the inner loop, crossing another bridge, and follow the sign to parking.
