" Ash nazg durbatuluk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatuluk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul!"

This year, 2012, marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's THE HOBBIT. This is the book that tells the story which is at the center of his more monumental work, THE LORD OF THE RINGS. Later this year, the movie will be released in two parts. To celebrate the anniversary, here is a nine-box series of two-sided hand-carved, NOT FOR TRADE, stamps which illustrate the nine riddles in Chapter 5, which I believe is the center of the center of the Trilogy.

the first riddle:

What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?

DIRECTIONS: Take RT 8 to Exit 13 Constitution Blvd/ Bridgeport Ave. (If you are travelling South, take a right at the end of the exit, and another right at the next light.) Get on to Constitution Blvd. South. Follow this to IvyBrook Rd. on your right. Enter the industrial park. Take the road to Mountainview Dr. on your right. Turn onto Mountainview Dr. and IMMEDIATELY COUNT four telephone poles on the right. At the fourth pole, Park and exit your vehicle.

CLUES: Look to your right,, up, up the hill. See the ledge of rock? Climb through the woods up to it. If you turn and look back to the hills beyond your vehicle, you are looking toward Rivendell Dr. (How cool is that!)With your back to your vehicle, walk to the right ALONG THE TOP OF THE RIDGE until you come to three oak trees In the group of three, there are two on the left, on the right there is a larger one. In between them, there is a lichen-covered, arrowhead-shaped pointer stone. It points into the woods, into a laurel thicket, where there is an unmarked path. Follow the path into the thicket until you come to another smaller ledge. See the long thin rock horizontally sticking out of the ground? The first RIDDLES BOX is hidden underneath it, behind a stone. There is a special metallic ink for stamping. But no logbook. PLEASE SNAP THE INK PAD CLOSED TIGHTLY. Please hide it well, after you have stamped in.
