12 Months in a Year – January

This is a series of 12 boxes observing each month of the year. TrailMix and Yankeesfan will do our best to get a box planted each month in a timely fashion. However, if we have another winter like 2010-2011, it will be quite a challenge! See you on the trails!

Directions: Clues are written to begin at the Tahmore Conservation Loop in Shelton. This can be reached by either Rte. 111 in Monroe or Rte. 110 in Shelton to East Village Rd., to Village Dr., to Tahmore Pl. (street sign on pole). However, there is a very steep, difficult hill to get down to find these boxes. If you want to re-figure the clues, you can begin at the Paugussett Trail located inside Indian Well State Park.

THERE IS NO INK WITH THESE BOXES – BRING YOUR OWN INK. LOGBOOK IS WITH BOX #2 ONLY.

Clues

Park at the dead end circle of Tahmore Place. Enter trail and take the loop to your left. Follow blue/yellow blazes. When blue/yellow trail meets with blue trail, take a left onto blue trail. Follow blue trail to overlook. Stop to enjoy the spectacular view and hear the busy sounds of our great city of Shelton. Being careful of your footing, continue to follow blue blazes. The trail now goes down a very steep hill. I found the best way down is the butt-slide. Once down below, you will hear the waterfall on your right. Look for a blue blazed tree. Then notice the 2-sister tree to your left. No, not that one, the other one! Look at base of 2-sister tree for Box #1. Since it is right next to trail, please re-hide well.

Back on the blue trail, follow it down (yes) another hill. When you see a “sentinel” rock on your right, look for a blue-blazed tree up ahead on your left. With your back to the blue-blazed tree, walk towards the edge of the hill, toward the waterfall. There is a grouping of boulders at the edge of the hill. Box #2 is under middle boulder. You can see the stone bridge at Indian Well State Park from these boulders. Now comes the fun part – climbing up those hills to get back to your car. Stop to rest at the overlook. Remember to look for intersection of blue trail with blue/yellow trail to get back to Tahmore Place.

I have to compliment the system of trails in Shelton and those who care for them, mostly volunteers. As a resident of Shelton, I am very grateful for their hard work. They make Shelton proud! And a Happy 2012 to all letterboxers!
