Starting in Shen. Co.-the location is southwest from the intersection of 42 and Rt. 675. After you find these roads on the map, look for the smaller route-691. Take 691 West toward West Virginia. 691 has some nice views. You will also pass the Middle Mountain Geocache site on your way to this letterbox (see geocaching.com, if interested; also, can provide some maps). Take 691 West until you leave Shenandoah County and enter Hardy County. There is a little green sign indicating the county change that has been pummelled with bullets, still slightly legible. Within 1/4 mile from this sign, you can park in a small parking area on the left for the North Mountain trail. The letterbox is about 4/10 of a mile from the parking area. If you have a GPS unit, the coordinates are: N38 55.361, W78 44.624. If you do not have a unit (as it is not necessary to have one to find the box), follow the N. Mtn. Trail (orange blazed trail). Some land marks on the way- The path starts out grassy covered in many areas; On the left side, you will pass a patch of Rhodedendron trees with lots of creepy, crawling trunks; (Continue); Trail gets rockier; A large amount of lichen covered rocks are on the right side; (Continue). Towards the peak of the mountain trail, look for a waist-high, chain-saw cut stump on the right edge of the trail. When you get to this stump, go 12 steps further on the trail. Turn 90 degrees to the right and take 10 steps forward. You should be standing at the base of a barkless, dead tree standing amongst a grove of ferns. Look for the letterbox in this area. If you are tired, there is a nice barkless tree laying on the ground you can sit down on to take a rest. Enjoy the short hike!
