The first time I visited Sand Lakes Quiet Area was in the year 2000. I had seen the sign on M72 many times and was curious about the place but had never been. It was a hot summer day and the sun was shining brightly. The hike was about 2.5 miles round trip. The lakes were breathtaking. Maybe it was just the way the sun was shining that day. I just couldn't believe such a beautiful place existed way out in the middle of nowhere! If attempting this box during hunting season, please wear orange. This area is open to hunters. I've encountered hunters, runners, dogs, deer, and snakes on these trails so please use caution! You will find the trail-head parking area on the left side of Broomhead Rd just before Sand Lakes Rd. Your walk will be a little longer than 2.5 miles but not too much. If you for some reason do not want to find both boxes in one trip, there is a parking area at post number 6 on Sand Lakes Rd which would be a shorter walk to get the second box. Do not park in this parking area to get box number one or if getting both boxes though.

Mrs. Inukshuk

Start at number 1 heading towards 2. There will be several blue triangles marking the path in case you get lost! You will cross Sand Lakes Rd before reaching 2. Notice all the tree stumps along your way. They all looked like good hiding spots but I really wanted you to see the lakes, so just keep on keeping on. At 2, continue going straight to 3. At 3, turn right to go to 4. You're now officially on the North Country Trail!! (you were on the NCT connector path before). When you get to 4, continue straight. I am not sure what number it leads to or if it's just an unofficial path to the lake. I got confused at post 4 to be honest. Anyway continue straight but don't go all the way to the water. At the decision point, go right. Keep walking until you reach a bench on your left. Take a seat and take in the view of the lake(s). Behind you to your right, notice the knotty birch trees. There are 4 of them I believe. Go to the second closest one to you. With the tree to your left, look in the distance ahead of you. Notice a stump at 260° about 18 steps from you. 10 more steps at 250° and you will come to another stump. Now to your left is a deteriorating log. Mrs. Inukshuk resides here near the curve. Please cover well with sticks and leaves.

Mayan Hand

Retrace your steps back to 3. At 3, follow the trail to 5. At 5, head in the direction of 7. You will not be going to 7. A short ways down the path there will be another path veering to the right. Take this path to the shoreline. Notice a water pump to your right. At the water pump take an additional 70 steps along the shoreline. Look to your right and spot an obvious multi-trunk tree. That is where the Mayan Hand is. Please make sure to cover well with sticks and leaves. Retrace your steps back to 5 to 3 to 2 to the parking lot :) *Alternate route for 2nd box* If you are attempting the 2nd box at a different time than the 1st box, park near marker 6 and walk .4 miles to marker 5 then continue the rest of the clue.
