I snowshoed up Baxter Mountain in the first snow of the season to release this letterbox. I was hoping to see the blueberry bushes up there but with 2 feet of snow I’ll have to believe the guidebook that they are there. It was a lovely leisurely hike of about a mile to the top.
Directions to trailhead: From the intersection of Rt. 9N (toward Elizabethtown) and Rt. 73 between Keene and Keene Valley go 2 miles up a long climb on Rt. 9N. The sign for the Baxter Mt. trailhead is on the right near the junction with Hurricane Rd. and Rt. 9N.
Clue: Follow the trail up, crossing under a power line and keep climbing for awhile until you come to the intersection with the Beede Road trail marked in red. Stay right on the Baxter Mt. trail and soon you will come to the first switchback. At the turn of this switchback look left and see a ledge. Go off trail and follow along the ledge until you reach a small maple and a fir tree growing near each other. Look in the ledge across from these trees into a vertical crack in the cliff to find the letterbox. Rehide well and continue up to the summit for some great views.
Bring ink—you can guess what color is the best.
