12 Months in a Year – December - REVISED CLUES 7/30/12

This is a series of 12 boxes observing each month of the year. TrailMix and Yankeesfan will do our best to get a box planted each month in a timely fashion. However, if we have another winter like 2010-2011, it will be quite a challenge! See you on the trails!

Directions: Located on the Tahmore Conservation Loop in Shelton. Take either Rte 111 in Monroe or Rte 110 in Shelton to East Village Rd., to Village Dr., to Tahmore Pl. (street sign on phone pole).

THERE IS NO INK WITH THESE BOXES - BRING YOUR OWN INK.

Clues

Box #1 December

With a free afternoon, five days before Thanksgiving, I should be at the supermarket. But the weather is beautiful, so I do what any dedicated boxer would do – plant! Park at the dead end circle of Tahmore Pl. Enter trail and go straight on red trail. Before you descend down a hill, look to the big Beech tree (thanks, SlowFoot!) on your left with the bird house. Now turn to your right and walk toward the tree with the slight "bubble" around the middle. Walk straight back from this tree and scramble up the hill a little to the first big boulder implanted in the hill. Find box #1 in the crevice on front of boulder (I hope no furry four legged critters live in there).

Box # 2 Auld Lang Syne

2011 was full of snow, deadly tornadoes, tropical storms and fall snowstorms. We all learned the function of a roof rake and how to get by without electricity. Mother Nature was a force to be reckoned with. Personally, it was the year of first plants, discovering trails and being hooked beyond belief on letterboxing, thanks to my letterboxing friend! Return to trail. There are steep ascending/descending hills and some climbing over fallen branches, rocks and water. Stay with blue/yellow trail. You will then come to an area that is surrounded by very large boulders. Pass through this area and continue on trail, next passing through a stonewall. Walk by a blue/yellow blazed tree. In literally 5 seconds, you will come to another blue/yellow blazed tree. Stop at this one and look beyond it to see a tree which resembles a giant foot. Between this "foot" and a boulder is Box #2, with stones on top. Continue on blue/yellow back to your car. If you have time, pass trail entrance where your car is parked and continue on blue/yellow trail to the Paugussett trail to the overlook, to see and hear some of the sights and sounds of Shelton and beyond. Then back track to your car.
