It is that time of year again. All three of my pups have their birthdays within a few weeks of each other. Because they are always together with me on the trails, I decided to plant their birthday boxes this year at the same preserve along the same trail. It is a beautiful place that we just discovered recently.

Make your way to Sterling City Road in Lyme. It is off of route 156 near the fairgrounds. Go about a 1/2 mile down this road to the Plimpton Preserve. You will see a large white sign on the hill on your left and there is room to park off the road, just barely, on the right. Park and carefully cross the road.

Hunting in season, by permit, is allowed here, but NOT on Saturdays or Sundays. Also, hunters are required to post the sign when in the preserve.

To start your hike, cross over the stone wall next to the preserve sign and head up and up...and up... and up... and up some more. At about the top, you will cross through a stone wall and have to go right. The blazes on sections of this trail are red (faded) and infrequent in many places, but they got us through to the end and back on our maiden voyage with no trouble.

After turning right, the trail levels a little, although still continuing uphill. It is a pretty walk with some cool, old trees. Notice a bent old tree off to your left. It looks like the wind continually blew in that direction to form it that way.

There are some blow downs from the recent storms across the path, but they are easy enough to get around.

When you get to the point where it is rather level and before the trail heads steadily downhill, you should see three good size rocks/boulders off to your left. A LARGE (Reilly), Medium (Doodles) and small (Baby D) set of rocks all in a row. We named them the three pup rocks. Stop here.

From the "Reilly" rock, look beyond it towards the edge of the hill. See a knee high rock standing by itself. Go to that rock and look behind it under a small rock to find Reilly's Fourth birthday box.

After stamping in and re-hiding and naturalizing the area, you can either head back to your car or go further along the trail to get Doodles and Baby D's boxes...-coming soon...

Have fun.

P.S. There is a first finder gift in this box...
