This lake's true name came from Indian dialect meaning "Plenty Elk".

Printing this map and bringing it along will be very helpful. Begin to follow the trail and be aware that the signs are "signs". They mark more than direction and distance.

At the first great divide gather some CHANTRELLE MUSHROOMS. They sometimes grow out from under the edge of fallen trees. Check for some under the uphill side of the large log that has been divided to allow passage.

At this division it is your choice - both lead to the Heron's fishing territory and the Elk’s thicket. On the north path you will see some huge burnt skeletons of ancient trees and end at campsites 1, 2 and 3. The south trail ends at campsites 4 and 5 where you would disembark if you came by watercraft. Either way you are only a short distance from campsites and the waters edge. On the middle path you will traverse a beautiful long boardwalk

As you near the lake on the North Trail a 3-way intersection forms a triangle around 2 signs that face a LARGE rotting stump. Who knows why these HERONS chose to build their nest in the hallow root on lake side of that stump under a pile of wood chunks.

As you near the lake on the South Trail there is a 3-way intersection with two sign pointing in opposite directions. Facing them glance over your right shoulder to see the LARGE 7 ft rotting stump. Around the back a “gray snake” slithers down to where a BULL ELK is resting in its thicket.

Helpful Hint: Do some research before setting out for these boxes ~ as the lake’s name implies there is more than one elk in this area.

This series also qualifies for the "extreme" attribute and would be wonderful letterbox adventure if you would like to arrive by water and find the boxes in reverse order. If a convenient time can be arranged the planter would enjoy arranging a kayak trip and accompanying you.

Hike to "Chantrelle" box is 1 mile.
Hike to “Herons” box is another mile.
Entire loop is 4 miles round trip and worth every step of it. There is plenty of room so it would be a wonderful place if you had forest or lake related stamps you wanted to plant.
