“This is for the birds”

It is a beautiful day to be outside exploring some of the wonder of Loudoun County, Virginia, so head to Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship. This place is known for good bird watching. It is open from dawn to dusk, 365 days per year and is free to use. Donations are always appreciated, and you can donate in a box at the trail head where you start this letterbox adventure.

(11661 Harpers Ferry Road Purcellville, VA 20132) Allow for 1 to 2 hours so that you will have the opportunity to take advantage of this beautiful property.

Upon entering the BRCES, follow the gravel road and park on the right in the lot in front of the main house. Read the bulletin board that announces upcoming activities at BRCES.

Walk along the gravel road, heading downhill. You will pass an out house on your right. If you are lucky, two cows will also be grazing on your right. Be aware and stay safe – Don’t go near the outhouse or the cows...stinky! :0 :0

At the trailhead, feel free to pick up a map which will provide additional information about the hike and some history behind the structures you will see while walking the Farmstead Loop. Now we start the real adventure!! Follow the Farmstead loop to your right. Stop and learn about chimney swifts and where they live.

Its time to fly, move along the trail, up ahead you can hide to watch the bird activity on the pond from behind the blind. Stop, gaze and be amazed by the graceful birds.

Moving along the path – it is decision time once you reach a fork in the in the path. Where to head? Stay the course on the trail which you came.

At the crossroads of paths, follow the sign for the Farmstead Loop. Along the way, stop for a minute – in the quiet of the moment, you will hear the forest come alive.

As you proceed along the Farmstead Loop, you will see many downed trees along to the right. Do not fret, do not fight, you are heading in the directions that's right – stay the course.

At the fork, stop and read the “Forest Layers” plaque. Learn interesting facts about the forest. Then head on down the “sinister” trail (along the same course you were traveling).

Come to the clearing with power lines to the left and right – Do not feel "powerless", the trail will resume just ahead!

Lo and Behold, a structure (#6) on the left , it is built with both old and newer construction. Take out your info sheet and find out about it's history. YOU FOUND IT!!! Just kidding. Continue on down the path.

Further down the pathway, on the right, there is a large collection of boulders. Stop and Listen. What do you hear? Running water depending on the time of the year. You are getting near. Continue along the Farmstead Loop.

Octo means "8". An octopus has eight legs, and even a tree can look like an octopus. At the base of the “octopus” tree there awaits your prize, under two large rocks, hidden from view you will find the box.

Replace the box under the rocks and hide it from view of those on the the trail. Now it is time to explore the rest of the Farmstead Loop trail. ENJOY!
