The West Lake Nature Preserve is a beautiful wetland park in Portage, MI. The park has a playground, picnic tables, and many hiking trails. This is a wetland area, so be prepared to get a little dirty. We saw deer and snakes while on our journey....but then I see snakes every time I enter the woods. :)
Enter the preserve and park near the playground. Pass the picnic pavilion and begin the Bushey Memorial Nature Trail. The trail begins paved but becomes dirt and floating decks. See the water up ahead?
Pass LNP Overlook #1. Continue straight. At #4, go 120 degrees for 24 steps. Where fallen line in a cross. Head 60 degrees for 20 steps. Where the dead one reaches to the sky. 350 degrees is where a fallen one with a log in front of it. Inside the hollow log is our Fearless Hiker.
Please reseal bags and containers carefully and rehide better than you found. Thanks!
Return to the path heading in the same direction. Pass 52. See the sign for the Overlook Deck #2? There is a broken stump at 45 degree. At the base you will find the Silver Maple.
Please reseal bags and containers carefully and rehide better than you found. Thanks!
Return to the path and follow until you reach the bench. After a rest, take the path at 140 degrees. Tall branch-less dead one on the right. 64 on the left. Go 26 paces past the number 64. Stump on the left. If you reach a tall one being hugged with other reaching aimlessly above, you have gone too far.
Please reseal bags and containers carefully and rehide better than you found. Thanks!
Follow the path to return to the parking lot.
