Mountainside Series (2)
Mountainside Park
Pequannock, NJ - Morris County
Placed by Wingfoot on 05/02/01
Added “King of the Hill” Letterbox 04/03/06

This used to be a one-box stop. I’ve expanded it into a series. I’ve left the old clues for folks looking to do just the Mountainside box, as that box is quick & easy and highly recommended for newbies. Many folks have stamped into this box as their “first letterbox.”

However, the expanded series with the “King of the Hill” letterbox is much more challenging.

DIRECTIONS: Mountainside Park is a Morris County Park in northern Morris County, New Jersey. From Interstate 287 get off at Route 23 heading south. Just before the second light turn right and keep bearing right onto West Parkway for about 1/2 mile to the first intersection with a 4-way stop. Turn right onto Mountain Avenue, which will pass under Interstate 287. Don’t forget to stop at Foothills Park to stamp in to MIDNIGHT’S letterbox. Once you pass under the bridge the park is immediately on your right. Follow road to end, there is a small parking area on right. If you come to a no trespassing sign, you've gone too far. Note, you will probably not see any signs saying you are at Mountainside Park.

MOUNTAINSIDE Letterbox only

Placed 05/02/01
Checked 04/03/06

Clues: Easy
Terrain: Fairly Easy with a gradual climb
Time: 1/2 hour

Search along roadside for blue blazed trail on right side of road and take it. Eventually you'll see a campfire. Go 33 paces at 80 degrees from campfire. You'll see a boulder, behind it, hidden under some rocks is what you seek.

Please hide box completely hidden from view where you found it after stamping in.

MOUNTAINSIDE SERIES (2)

Placed 05/02/01 & 04/03/06

Clues: Easy
Terrain: Hilly
Difficulty: Hard
Time: 1 ½ - 2 hours

NOTE: The “King of the Hill” letterbox is a challenging letterbox. There are multiple climbs and descents. You will be rewarded with fantastic views at the top, but to become the “King of the Hill”, you are going to have to earn it.

“King of the Hill” letterbox
Placed 04/03/06

Start at the small parking lot. Take yellow trail. Yellow trail merges with red, stay with the merged yellow-red trail. When trail splits, take yellow trail. You’ll eventually come to the orange trail. Stay on yellow trail as you begin your big climb. Follow yellow trail to the end. At the top of the hill there are benches to rest on. Relax and enjoy the views. Once you catch your breath it’s time to find what you came here for. Go to the kiosk. From there go 24 paces at 30 degrees to a pile of rocks. Hidden within the pile of rocks is what you seek. Stamp in and then hide box where you found it completely hidden from view.

Now find the start of the blue trail and take it down the hill. Be careful, some parts are steep with tricky footing. You’ll eventually cross a bridge, stay with the blue trail. (Note: You’ll pass two campfires off to the left of the trail before coming to the campfire you want, one before the bridge and one after it) Eventually you'll see a campfire in the middle of the trail. Go 33 paces at 80 degrees from campfire. You'll see a boulder, behind it, hidden under some rocks is what you seek.

Please hide box completely hidden from view where you found it after stamping in.

Continue on blue trail back to road. Take right up road, on right is the parking lot.
