12 Months in a Year – November

This is a series of 12 boxes observing each month of the year. TrailMix and Yankeesfan will do our best to get a box planted each month in a timely fashion. However, if we have another winter like 2010-2011, it will be quite a challenge! See you on the trails!

November – Directions

Follow Rte 111 in Monroe north towards Rte 34. As the road makes a steep descent, watch for Cottage Street on your right. If you come to the intersection of Rte 34, you have gone too far. Follow Cottage Street until you come to a parking area on your left which is next to the railroad tracks. Park here and follow the trail, which runs next to the RR tracks, into the woods.

Bonus stamp

“What walks down stairs alone or in pairs, and makes a slinkity sound? A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing, everyone knows it’s Slinky…It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky, for fun it’s a wonderful toy, it’s Slinky, it’s Slinky, it’s fun for a girl and a boy.”

November 26, 1943 – the invention of the Slinky. Richard James, a naval engineer, was working with tension springs while trying to develop a meter designed to monitor horsepower on naval battleships. When one of the springs fell to the ground, a toy was born. The word “slinky” is a Swedish word meaning traespiral-sleek or sinuous. It took James two years to develop the toy, but during the 1945 Christmas season, Slinky was ready for its debut. This occurred at Gimbel’s Department store in Philadelphia, PA. During the 90 minute demonstration, 400 Slinky toys were sold. Richard and Betty James ran the company together until 1960, when Richard James left his wife and six children to join a Bolivian religious order/cult. Betty James took over as CEO and successfully ran the company. She was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 2001. Richard James died in 1974. Each Slinky is made from 80 feet of wire. Over a quarter billion have been sold worldwide.

Clues

Follow the blue blazed trail along the RR tracks. When you see a tree with double blue blazes and three blue triangles, be sure to follow the trail to the left down the hill. The trail gets wet and muddy at this point. Cross over the brook and continue to follow the trail on the other side. Shortly, you will see that a trail goes off to the right, with a wooden plaque on a tree that says “Indian Well 6.10 m”. Follow the trail the way the arrow points. You will then come upon a tree with an orange “POSTED” sign on it. Look up the hill to your left to see the only big boulder. November is behind the boulder. Please rehide well.
