RAVEN ROCK

Located astride Interstate 68, eight miles west of Bruceton Mills, WV, Coopers Rock State Park offers many outdoor activities, including hiking in the summer and XC skiing in the winter. The main attraction is an easily accessible rock outcrop that overlooks the Cheat River 1000 feet below and the valley beyond. Be sure to see this view. Over to the left, a second rock outcrop can be seen from this overlook. This is Raven Rock and reaching it involves a harder, 1.1 mile hike down a well marked, rock strewn trail. It took us 40 minutes each direction to get to and from Raven Rock.
WARNING: There are poisonous snakes in this area. In 40 years of hiking we had never encountered a dangerous snake, until the day we placed this letterbox! It was a cool day and he was mostly asleep, but, there was mister rattler, right in the middle of the trail!

TO GET THERE

Take exit 15 off interstate 68 and follow the state park signs 2.2 miles to the trail head parking lot on the right. (May I suggest going on to visit Coopers Rock first. It is only a mile or so further on.)
Cross the road and follow the Raven Rock Trail signs. (Right at the fork.)
The trail takes an "S"-turn and has a short but fairly steep climb just before reaching Raven Rock..
After reveling in the view, start back along the trail to the three power ling poles. From the poles, step off 45 steps along the back trail. (This should put you on top of a large triangular shaped rock in the trail.)
On the right you should see a couch size bolder about 5 feet off the trail. On the backside of this bolder, in a crack under the bolder you will find the Raven Rock letterbox with a rock on it to keep it from drifting away. The hardest part is to now get the letterbox out!! Poke around in the crack with a stick before reaching in to retrieve the box. Hope you enjoy the hike, the view and the search.
