This is another box in honor of Walt Whitman, who used to hike these very woods.

Take West Hills Road to Resevoir Road and go all the way to the end and park. Head onto the path that begins at the end of the road.

Pass the old bathrooms and the abandoned swing set and then go around the gate and onto the hiking trail. Say hi to Walt as you pass him on the trail. When you come to the tree with blaze on it directing you to go right, do the opposite.

Take this trail up the hill. You’re heading up Jayne’s Hill and when you reach the top, you will be standing on the highest point on Long Island. Take a look at the verse from Whitman on the big boulder about his beloved Paumanok. After reading the verse and resting for awhile if you wish, look to the right. This is the trail you want to take.

Head down the trail and as it curves to the right, notice that there is another trail on the left heading off into the woods. This is where you want to go next.

After about 30 paces, you are going to come to a choice, but it isn’t really a choice at all, because what you’re searching for is already within your sight.

Turn to your left, where there is yet another path. Take 5 steps. To your right is a fallen guardian of the woods. Tucked underneath it, just past its first arm is what you seek.

After stamping in, go back up to the main trail. Instead of heading back up to the top of Jayne’s Hill, turn left. This trail with either lead you back to the beginning, or, if you have the clues, will lead you down to Toad Pond.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a new, but still store bought stamp.
