Leaves
There are three things which influence leaf color: leaf pigments, length of night and weather. But basically what happens is as days grow shorter, and nights grow longer and cooler, biochemical processes in the leaf begin to change the color. Certain colors are characteristic of particular species. Oaks turn red, brown or russet; hickories turn golden bronze; aspen and yellow poplar turn golden yellow; dogwood turn purplish red; beech turn light tan. Maples differ species by species – red maple turns brilliant scarlet; sugar maple turn orange-red; and black maple turn a glowing yellow. Striped maple becomes almost colorless. Leaves of some species such as elms simply shrivel up and fall, exhibiting little color other than drab brown. So enjoy the brilliant display before it’s time to get the rakes out!

Directions

This box is located on Birchbank Road in Shelton. Get yourself to Indian Well State Park. Pass the first parking area on your right. Keep going until you come to the beach parking area on your right. Across from this and on your left will be parking for the Paugussett Trail. Park here.

Clues

Enter the trail at kiosk. Immediately climb up and up a steep hill. Keep watch for white trail blazes. When you come to a sign that says Well Trail, take it to the left. This is now a blue blazed trail. Up ahead you will see that X marks the spot. But not for this box! Go a little farther to see a big tree with a double blue blaze. Look for the LEAVES box in some rocks across from this tree. Sorry for the short hike, but I did not want to go any farther in my sneakers. Our basement was flooded when tropical storm Irene hit. Guess where my hiking boots were!
