For my first Letterbox I hand carved a stamp for one of my favorite fishes. Omilu or Blue fin Trevally is a prized shoreline caught fish that can be found nearly anywhere in Hawaii. Omilu's can be distinguished by their bright blue and yellow colors on their fins and bodies. Get some exercise with a short walk to find my letterbox and be sure to take in the awesome views from the lookout.
Start your quest at Fort Ruger Park (aka Triangle Park) at the intersection of Diamond Head Road and Kahala Ave (park on the street here if you want to walk). Walk or drive 0.4 miles west bound on Diamond Head road until you reach a lookout point on your left. Park here if you drove. Take a couple of minutes to enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean and the surfers.
Starting from the eastern end of the parking lot you will see a “No parking 10pm to 5am” sign covered by some branches and a Hawaiian Telcom Telephone. Follow the rock wall until you reach the 3rd “No Parking Sign”. Between the 3rd “No Parking Sign” and a graffiti/sticker covered “Danger do not go beyond this point “you will see a clearing. Jump over the rock wall and look for a 15ft tall cactus with a circle in the middle within this clearing.
Walk toward the west side/Waikiki side of the cactus. Beware of the nearby cliff. You should be able to look thru the middle circle of the cactus and view Koko Head and Black point. Be careful not to touch the cactus. Look down and you will see two main trunks of the cactus. You’ll see an opening in which you can squat down and avoid the cactus spines. Under the right trunk (Oceanside) you’ll find your prize covered by some rocks.
