June 6, 2016. The letterbox was updated today. Enjoy for 2016!

The Forest King is a Michigan White Pine that stands on the left side of Rock Trail, just off North Bicycle Trail. The Forest King is described in ‘Historic Mackinac’ as ‘a magnificent lone pine tree which excites the admiration of all who see it.’ That book, by Edwin O. Wood, was published in 1918, almost a century ago. The Forest King is one of Mackinac’s lesser-known natural wonders.
To reach the Forest King, take Fort Street to the top of the hill and turn right on Huron Road, which runs behind Fort Mackinac. Just past the totem pole and Boy Scout Barracks (on your left), turn left onto Garrison Road at the fork. Go about 50 yards and turn right onto North Bicycle Trail. Travel another 100 yards to Rock Trail, which will be on your right.
Walk along Rock Trail until you find the Forest King. It is clearly the king of trees along the trail and will be on your left side. Take a moment to admire this magnificent pine tree. If you are facing the Forest King, turn 180 degrees. With your back to Forest King, you will see several small cedar trees, one of which has a ‘Y’ in its structure. Walk behind the Y tree and move a rock and some small branches at its trunk to find the Forest King letterbox! Please place the notepad and stamp back into it's ziplock bag inside the container. Thank you!
