This excursion will give you a brief overview of the FX Matts trail. This is a popular snowmobile trail for the winter months but also serves as a nice hiking trail all year round. Bring your seasonally appropriate gear with you and enjoy your adventure!

The FX Matts trail is located about 1.2 miles down South Shore Road coming from the center of Inlet. The address used to locate the trail is 2682 South Shore Rd., Old Forge, NY. This is the address of the Red Dog Restaurant that is directly next to the trailhead. This trail is much closer to the center of Inlet than to Old Forge. There is parking on site.

For your adventure, park in the lot of the trail head (shared with Red Dog) near the small signs saying “FX Matts Trail 6 miles” to begin.

Enter the trail at the back right corner of the parking lot. Continue on the trail for about .25 miles. You will pass a sign with a trail map and other helpful information. Further on the trail you will pass two birch trees growing from one stump forming a “V” on your right. Continue on the trail as it starts to go uphill. About thirty paces up the small hill (about ¾ of the way up, before the slight right curve), you should see two trees, one pine and one birch, growing together making a “V”. Stop at these twin trees. If you pass a very small pond on your left, you have walked too far.

Slightly to the left next to the twin trees you should see the lone pine tree. Look between the twin trees and the lone pine tree and you will see a dead fallen tree about twenty paces into the woods.

Walk to the near end of the dead fallen tree and right in front of it should be another pine tree. In the roots of this tree you will find the letterbox covered with sticks and leaves. Enjoy!

NOTE: Please bring your own ink pad and pen. Thanks!
