From M-51, between Dowagiac and Niles, take Pokagon Hwy. West (sign for Arthur Dodd Memorial Park) approx. 1/4 mile to Wood Rd. Turn left.

**Additional Point of Interest - there is a tiny park with a Michigan Historical Marker on the NW corner - go to
http://www.michmarkers.com for map of the area and additonal info.
"The purpose of this site is to promote a knowledge of Michigan History and to encourage people to stop at these sites and then to learn more."
Get to Cass County and look at Sumnerville Mounds/Sumnerville Cemetery. There is a good photo of the entrance to Sumnerville Cemetery.

Many Pokageon pioneers are buried here, the earliest marked grave dates from 1830.
The first white settler of Cass County is buried here:
"In October 1825 Uzziel Putnam, his wife, Anna and their two-year old daughter, Ziltha packed up their belongings - including 3 oxen and 17 head of cattle - and left Fort Wayne, IN for Michigan. They first stopped at Niles and then on 18 November, moved into a small floorless shanty on the Pokagon Prairie, becoming Cass County's first permanent settlers." They are buried here.
Veterans, beginning with the War of 1812, are interred here as well.

Once you've turned left at Wood Rd., pass through the prominent pillars at the entrance.
Look left, give a HOOT, don't pollute.
Look right, would you be vacuuming today if you weren't out letterboxing???
Notice the magnificient trees here as you continue forward
past the wrong way BEACH.
Continue uphill,
See Shaffer family plot on Left, take the path less travelled past Adelia, Archibald and Jincy.
The first names sound so unusual by today's standards, but apparently common in the early 1800's. The old, old stones look like books. A bit more forward, the name Alonzo makes me think of the "Little House on the Prairie" series.
Follow the path to the right, before you plow into a cornfield, then keep an eye out for a heart (YEAGER), as you will have to turn right again before passing it to get back to the main road. There you'll see SHAW on your right and a toppled one on the left.
Continue forward until you see twin evergreens on your left. (GENEVIEVE LAWSON)
The roses are planted in the one on the right (North)

-As always, re-seal, re-place well. Thanks.
