Five-year-old Gavin has carved another tribute to Middlefield's farmers. This stamp is dedicated to Farmer Tuthill whose farm is long gone, and the days when his enterprising young daughter sold strawberries by the side of the road are only fond memories. Gavin knows Farmer Tuthill's daughter, and I made the mistake one day of telling him the strawberry story. He immediately wanted to set up a stand for our tiny crop which barely made a few shortcakes.

Directions:

Locate Coginchaug Greenway on Strickland Road which connects east to Cherry Hill and West to Route 157. There is parking on the site on a concrete foundation where signage identifies the area as Middlefield Open Space.

Clues:

Make your way east on the mown path and turn right (there will be a house uphill in front of you), keeping the bluebird house and and bench above you on the left. As you near the bench above you (great view from up there, by-the-way), you will see a tree surrounded by a clump of bushes part way down the hill. Immediately in front of you to the right of the path is a similar tree with a clump of weeds and bushes beginning a line of scrub and Autumn Olive lining the path. At the base of that tree, under a rock, is Farmer Tuthill riding his tractor. At the time of the planting, a beer bottle points directly to the spot. If you continue on the trail, you will meet up with the lower trail and eventually the Strickland Tractor.

Please, carefully replace the heavish rock on top of the box so as not to crack the cover. Thanks so much!
