The winter Olympics were held in Lake Placid in 1932 and 1980. The village is still very much involved in Olympics related things. We’ve had this box for a long time looking for the perfect place for a plant. Actually putting it in the Village was a no go—too many people everywhere. So, we headed out of town a bit.

Head toward Saranac Lake on Rt 86 and stop at the McKenzie Mountain Wilderness Area on the right. According to my GPS, I was 5.4 mi from Lake Placid and 4.3 mi from Saranac Lake. Follow the foot trail. After the second rock crossing, head slightly up hill to the stump in the middle of the trail. Keep going about 78 steps where you should see a big boulder on the left with little trees growing on it. Look on the uphill side between the rock and the tree and under the usual bark.

Seal up everything tightly to keep dry and cover well when you’re done.
