For those of us living in the hinterlands, the sound of the CDF bombers strikes both terror in the heart (oh my Goodness, where is the fire) and incredible relief (the men in the white hats are on the way).
The Ukiah Air Attack base was established in 1958 and protects over 3 million acres of land in Mendocino County, the northern half of Lake Co., parts of Trinity and Glenn Counties and a small portion of Sonoma County. Ukiah responds to an average of 160 calls in a fire season. In 2003, CDF proposed closing the Ukiah base and moving the aircraft to other sites. Ukiah residents went nuts, saying abandonment of Ukiah would have a disastrous effect on fire protection because minutes count. Thankfully the idea was abandoned.

The Ukiah Air Attack base is at an obvious location. The original plant has been obscured by Homeland Security so the box has been moved. When you enter the airport, turn South and head to the white fence. Park near the far western end of the fence. Just south of this end of
the fence there's a two trunked oak and under it a SPOR.
this one has disappeared.

Before you depart, say a silent thank you for the protection these fine folks provide.
