Lew Carpenter was a professional football player and coach for 47 years. He played for ten seasons in the NFL as a halfback and fullback with the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, and Green Bay Packers. After his playing career ended, Carpenter spent 31 years as an assistant coach in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Oilers, Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles. Carpenter also coached the Frankfurt Galaxy of the World League of American Football in 1996 and at Southwest Texas State University. He died on November 14, 2010 and is buried in San Marcos Cemetery.
Directions:
From I35 go through town on Hwy 80 (Hopkins), then right on old RR 12 (Moore) to San Marcos Cemetery on the left. Go through entry arch and follow Memorial Drive as it bends right and becomes Evening Star. Continue around chapel and continue on Evening Star for about 75 yards to just past Pincham grave on left.
Clues:
Walk 35 steps to a large tree next to a chain-link fence. Microbox is about 1 foot behind tree under cement and rocks. Please replace as described. I was not able to find Lew's grave, but I recommend looking for it in this interesting cemetery.
