NOTE: New and updated clues!

Northport is a charming, waterfront village that was settled in the early 1600’s. It is located in Suffolk County, and is part of the famed “Gold Coast” on Long Island’s North Shore.

History
Northport was first inhabited by peaceful Indians known as the Matinecocks, whose camp perched on a lakeshore site, which is now occupied by the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). In 1650, the first white men came to the territory from New Amsterdam and reported their discovery to the Dutch government at The Hague. The report described “good fishing, fine meadowlands and mostly level ground suitable for farms and cattle.” Six years later, this area (which would be called Great Cow Harbor) was purchased from Chief Asharoken by three Englishmen for 7 quarts of liquor, 2 coats, 4 shirts and 11 ounces of powder. Relations between the settlers and the Indians were friendly, and the small colony flourished with farming and shell-fishing.

Today, picture-postcard Main Street offers visitors a magnificent view of the scenic harbor and homes dating back to the 18th century. Come and check out the many boutiques, antique shops and restaurants that have made Northport Village such a popular place to visit!

Start your adventure in Northport Village Park, at the large black anchor that’s sitting upon a gigantic stone compass.

The anchor is dedicated to Paul and Frederick Wilson.

Using the stone compass to guide you, walk 30 steps east towards the small flagpole.

There you will find a monument dedicated to some very special women.

Walk across the street, and pass through the two DO NOT ENTER signs. Now you will be in a parking lot, so be very careful!

Stand with the water on your left-hand side, and walk straight ahead, towards the blue ‘Northport Village Park’ sign.

When you are in front of the blue sign, look to your right where there are four park benches. You will notice a memorial rock.

Take a moment to pay tribute to the men and women of Northport who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001.

Behind this memorial is a lovely spot where you can spread out a blanket on the lush, green grass and enjoy a picnic lunch!

Now, follow the black path that is on your left-hand side. Continue past 4 large trees and turn left before the second lamp-post.

You will see 4 spots where people meet to play the game that is believed to have been invented in India around the 6th century. They called the game “caturariga”. The Persians then added rules and called it “shatranj”.

Near the fourth table, stop and say hello to “Coot”.

Now, continue along the path towards the small black anchor. Cross the green pasture, towards the ‘Great White Octagon.’

Take 6 steps up, and enjoy the view from this shady spot.

There’s a fun playground for kids on the left, and beautiful views of the water on your right.

The Northport Community Band performs here on Thursday nights during the summer-months. You can bring a blanket or chair and enjoy the Summer Concert Series while you eat!

Retrace your steps downward, and turn left. Take note of the ‘Krueger-rock.’

Proceed towards the twin-sister tree. Take a seat on the nearby boulder. Get your rubber-stamp ready ….. you’re almost there!

While sitting on the boulder, look right and you will see 2 very large trees.

Near the base of the second tree (hidden in the ivy) you will find the treasure that you’re looking for!

Watch out for muggles! Bring the letterbox back to the boulder where you can secretly stamp into the logbook. Please be discreet and re-hide the letterbox exactly where you found it !

Have fun!
