Good Dogs are Contained (kept) by Responsible Owners
(Dog Scouts of America “Good Dog” series)

The clues for finding the letterboxes in this series all have to do with creating a good dog. To “decode” the clues, answer the questions on this short test. For more information about containing your dog see the Dog Scouts of America web site www.dogscouts.org.

After each statement, pick the answer below it (true or false) to get the clue you need. It might help to cross out the WRONG answers, so that you don’t accidentally follow the clues into a radioactive waste dump site or something.

True or False

Your dog wants to be near you and should receive attention, exercise, quality food and water each day.

True – Go to an area known as “Maple Valley” between West Branch and Houghton Lake.
False – Go to the town of “Hell” Michigan, because life isolated on a chain in the backyard for a dog is a lot like this.

The more training your dog has received, the more freedom he will have to go places with you and be welcomed by others.

True - Drive 2 ½ miles south of old M-55 on F-97
False – Drive 2 ½ miles south of town on the main road.
.
A responsible owner will make sure his or her dog is safely contained in a fenced area, or allowed outside on a tether if the dog can not be observed while outdoors.

True – Turn Left (east) on the seasonal road across from Emery Road.
False – Go to the intersection of Road Pizza Hwy and Sail Cat Street

A dog doesn’t need to play or have his mind stimulated. He should just be happy tied up in the back yard all day long without attention.

True – Turn onto road where you can hear the frustrated dogs barking in the back yard.
False – Go about 1.1 mile on this road to find the trail where you’ll turn.

If your dog is an inside dog, it is not necessary to concern yourself about heartworm preventative and it is not necessary for your dog to be immunized against Distemper, Hepatitus, Lepthospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, and Rabies

True – Turn left onto Phulish Pursin drive.
False – You’ll be driving up a long Hill, and down it again. Then the road curves a little to the left.

Debilitating parasites like roundworms, hookworms and whipworms can infect your dog and cause him not to be well, even though he may not show symptoms of parasite infestation. You need to have your dog’s stool checked at the veterinarian at least once per year.

True – You’ll find a sandy dirt trail off to the right (south), concealed by some young maples.
False – Park your car at the roadside park where all of the irresponsible dog owners have not been picking up after their dogs. Be careful your dog does not step in the waste and pick up a parasite (it’s probably infested with worm eggs).

You will have a far better chance of recovering your dog if he becomes lost, if your dog wears an identification tag, is tattooed, or microchipped (or all three!).

True – Take this to an intersection where it crosses a more grassy trail going east and west.
False – Walk your dog down the trail to your left. Use a leash, since it is a city ordinance, and your dogs may not be wearing I.D. so they will be returned to you if lost.

All dogs need regular grooming and nail trimming, even if they don’t require a “haircut.” Groomers routinely perform ear cleaning and anal sac expunging, and if you don’t take your dog to be groomed, you need to perform these procedures yourself.

True - From the center of the sandy dirt road, walk 90 steps at 90* east
False – Walk until you see the caution sign.

Dogs don’t need to get their teeth brushed or worry about oral hygene, because they don’t eat sweets, and the act of chewing bones and eating dry dog food keeps the plaque off their teeth.

False - Four steps at 10* will take you to the hidden box.
True – If you’ve gotten this far choosing the wrong answers, you’ll be lost. I hope you’ll do a little research before you actually get a dog.

Please carefully replace and completely conceal this box, so that people walking down the trail will not discover it.
