The Canyon Road letterboxes are hidden along a scenic route, south of Ellensburg nearly halfway to Yakima. You should be able to track down both of these within an hour.

To the Trailhead: Head south from Ellensburg on Canyon Road/Route 821 to the BLM campground at Umtanum Creek Recreation Area. Park near the suspension bridge.

To the Umtanum Apple Letterbox: Walk to the interpretive sign and the bench overlooking the Yakima River. Watch for Bighorn Sheep on the canyon rim to the north. Swing into the canyon at 240 degrees magnetic. Take caution where you might hear bellowing and rumbling. Continuing upstream, you will pass an ungulate buffet and a beavers’ workshop. Coming into the second meadow, you will see a lone apple tree to your left. At its base, you will find this little letterbox hidden beneath a river rock.

To the Yakima Canyon Letterbox: After cautiously avoiding bellowing and rumbling you will pass through a thicket. About a dozen steps after emerging from the willows, take a trail to the left. Continue uphill to a point where rimrock nearly touches your path. Go left along this wall at until you are standing between slender trunks and basalt. Look near your feet for the box.
