This is our first "Extreme" letterbox. It's "Extreme" because of the drive, not the hike: 6 miles up a gravel, one-lane logging road, at an altitude of about 4000-4200 ft.! The road itself is in good, drivable shape. It actually has a few pot-holes, but no more or worse than any in Eugene! Having said that, it is a slightly steep mountain road; you'll need a vehicle with good traction. Also keep in mind, it gets lots of snow in the winter.
But, believe us...it's a pretty drive, the whole way and the views from the road gets better, the higher up you go. Then...there's the lake itself! Beautiful! We hadn't been back there for a couple years & we forgot how pretty it is up there! Bring a LUNCH & a CAMERA!! You'll need both There are a few nice campgrounds in this whole area, too!(The logbooks are about 2x2in.)

CLUES: Find yourself on Row River Road out of Cottage Grove, heading to Dorena. Stay on this all the way past the Sharp's Creek Bridge, to Brice Creek Rd. Follow the road all the way until 1 1/2 miles past Cedar Creek Campground. Take a right on the one-lane gravel road with the "Crawfish Lake 6" miles sign. Stay on this alll the way up, passing small "trailhead" signs. Do NOT take any side roads! You'll come to the Crawfish Lake Trailhead parking area.

Box #1 CRAWFISH: Oops! I wrote Craw "dad" on the back of the stamp. Anyhoo, after parking, follow the trail for about .1 miles. When you see the large foot bridge with hand rails,on your left, take that path. At first, this path doesn't seem to be going around the lake, but wait...! Now it curves right to a more lakeward direction. Soon, just before you get to the spot with a broad view of the lake, on the left of the trail, notice the small evergreen with a curve at it's base. This small tree seems to have stopped a boulder from sliding onto the trail! (Thanx, tree!) Anyway, look under the boulder & behind a small rock. Rehide well.

Box #2 TROUT: Stay on the trail. Now you may want to take a shot of the beautiful lake view! Then, a very large snag marks the point where the trail is again more wooded. There is a tree leaning across the trail, near a very tall snag. Then a 5 1/2 ft. stump on the right. Another pretty good view-point! Keep going. Oh wow! Check out the "nurse log on your left as the trail goes between it and a large tree! The trail now curves right, heading around the back-side of the lake. After a bit, the trail curves left and away from the lake. Kinda up-hill, through logs & stumps. Pass through a log that has been cut to allow trail access. About 15 steps later, notice the "rooty" end of an old fallen log, atop a small hill, to your left. Look in the crook of the roots, under bark & a rock. (There really are trout in the lake, too! Not just in logs!) Rehide well.

Box #3 FROG: Continue. The trail opens up again! There's a big stump on the right. Now, heading down the trail & through the woods, then up & through the Rhodies!! Hark!! I spy a "picanik" table! The Bear-grass blooms smell out of this world & Rhodies are all around (Rhodies don't smell, dang it! Rip off!) Check out the "shelter"! Nice & dry here! Standing inside the shelter, look out & take the path ahead. At the "Y", go right. Stand at the hand-rail. Looking at the lake, check all the way to your right, under the largest rock with the Rhodie growing out of it (next to it)look under the "shelf", and under debris. Please Rehide well! Thanx & enjoy the hunt & the lovely Crawfish Lake!
