HINENI (HEE-NAY-NEE) POMEGRANATE
- in memory of Therese Romano
Many hikers and letterboxers have come upon locations of such majesty and natural beauty, where they feel they have been in the presence of a Power greater than themselves. Some have heard their Creator call out to them in these places. Some have responded, "Hineni! Here I am!" and thus identified themselves as people who have a place in their lives for the sacred and the divine.
The Hineni Series of six letterboxes represents the colors that were mandated to be woven into the curtain which once hung in Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, separating the people from the Holy of Holies. This series celebrates people who in death have passed through this curtain, but in life walked daily with divine companionship. The six letterboxes are all hidden in locations of blessed peace and Nature at her finest.
Take RT 8 North to Exit 23. At the end of the exit turn right and proceed to the center of Beacon Falls. You cannot miss the wonderfully restored and very green iron bridge. Take a left over the bridge and a right onto Cold Springs Road. Follow this road along the railroad tracks, bearing right as the road turns from pavement to packed dirt to very bumpy gravel. Follow it all the way through the cement Jersey Barriers.
You will come upon a metal gate. If it is open, continue to drive to the second closed metal gate on your left, and park. Beyond this gate is a gravel path. Follow it along the stream until you come upon a small island of hemlocks and one slender sentinel silver birch in the middle of the path. Look to the left to see a path to a serene brookside clearing and groups of smooth moss-covered boulders. Follow the stream to the right, looking high on the opposite bank as you walk. You will quickly see on the opposite bank a tree with a round hole at its base and mossy, bumpy roots. Cross the brook and climb up behind this tree. Look to the right for its neighbor who has a flat round stone at its base. The HINENI POMEGRANATE LETTERBOX is under the stone.
(The Waterfalls Seven Letterbox is nearby.)
