Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve Nature Stroll

Located along State Road 49, just North of the Indiana Toll Road, the beautiful Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve, having 150 plus acres, showcases the inspiring and aesthetically stunning marriage between nature and culture. Enjoy a scenic, yet serene, hike on over five (5) miles of walking, biking, and running trails.

Are you ready? Let’s begin!

Start at the stone spire, located in the front of the Preserve entrance. You will now begin walking South on the brick path. Continue walking, taking the first trail (brick pavers) toward the Weir Bridge. Take a moment to notice the breath-taking fountain, impressive Amphitheater, and serene pond, located on your left. Can you spot any fish or turtles in the pond?

Continue traveling across the Weir Bridge. Be sure to take notice of the stone dam. How many bluegill fish can you see in the water? Are you lucky enough to spot any bass today? Once you’ve soaked up the beauty of the Weir Bridge and its surroundings, continue strolling on the brick path to the right. Hopefully you’re not tired at this point, however, if you’d like to take in the serenity of the Preserve, feel free to take a rest on the bench to your left.

Continue on the brick path, going right. If you missed your chance to sit down and take in all of the Preserve’s beauty just a few moments ago, you may do so on the second bench on your left.

You might have noticed that the bricks you’ve been walking upon have now turned to boardwalk. You’re right on track! Stop here and be sure to take in the view of the Overlook on your right. Do you hear any frogs? The Creek Overlook pavilion is a great place to stop and search for small critters in the creek like crayfish.

After stopping on that small section of the boardwalk path you will want to now take the brick path towards the left. Then immediately after crossing the brick path there should be a dirt trail to your right with five (5) large white oak trees coming up on your right?

There are resident houses located to the left now. Are any Coffee Creek residents sitting on their patios, relaxing and enjoying an outstanding view of Mother Nature? Be sure to give them a friendly wave as you continue on your journey!

Next you will find yourself crossing Bridge #3 in the Preserve. Can you hear the chirping of the birds? Can you spot any birds in the trees? I’m sure you can, as there have been over 100 different species of birds reported in the Preserve! Isn’t that amazing?

After crossing the bridge you will find yourself at the Pavilion meadow. Do you see the small building with the plant covered roof? That’s the green roofed restroom. The green plants on top of the roof help filter stormwater runoff. Do you recognize the structure adjacent to the restroom? Of course you do! That’s the Pavilion made from sustainable redwood trees. It has over twenty (20) picnic tables, two (2) grills, and two (2) fireplaces, I’m sure you’ll want to stop to eat your picnic lunch in this area. I can’t think of a spot in the Preserve that would be more perfect!

Continue on the path to the right. Now you’re crossing Bridge #2, which crosses over Coffee Creek. What creatures can you spot in its clear flowing water?

Take the track to the right. Did you see the Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve rock on the left as you turn right? You will pass 7 more of these markers before crossing off the trail towards the letterbox.

Did you forget to pack a dessert in your picnic lunch? No worries! Take advantage of the wild raspberries growing in those bushes adjacent to the trail. Watch out for poison ivy though. Remember, leaves of three leave them be!

Now you will stay on the trail for awhile staying left at every T. Wow! Do you believe the number of butterflies fluttering about the Preserve? Continue left.

Now you should feel like you’ve entered a different ecosystem. That’s because, essentially, you have. Welcome to the riparian forest area of the Preserve. Riparian means to have or be near water.

Are you enjoying a break from the blazing sun? Take a deep breath of the oxygen the large trees around you are graciously providing. Pay attention to nature’s unique bark textures of the might giant oaks, basswoods, hickories and maples that surround you as you continue walking the path.

Remembering that you will pass more Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve markers on the left be on the look-out too for triple stone benches on your right. Once you see the third set of stone benches, walk approximately sixty (60) paces. On your right-hand side, look for a narrow path that leads into the woods. It will be near large a patch of Oak trees. As you travel into the woods, notice the Coffee Creek bend on your right. Approximately sixty-five (65) paces in, there is a log next to a large Oak tree on your right. Be careful as an animal decided to make his hole of a home right in the middle of this little path. Don’t fall in!

You will find the letterbox on the back side of the log.

We hope you enjoyed your visit to the Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve! Be sure to visit us often! We’re open all year, free of charge!
