Directions:
Holmdel Arboretum is part of Holmdel Park. You can take the Garden State Parkway to exit 114, and go west on Red Hill Road. From there, make a right onto Crawford's Corner Road, and follow the brown park signs.
You'll pull into the main parking area for the park (it also says Longstreet Farm). Pull into the first parking lot on the left. You can get park and arboretum maps in the little covered walkway in the middle of the lot.
Difficulty:
This is a 20 minute walk round trip.
Clue:
Start at the multicolored sign for the arboretum. Start your walk through Crabapple Alley. You will notice a large European Beech standing on it's own, just on the other side of some U-shaped groundcover. From there, go 240 degrees to the Yellow Buckeye. Then, head 232 degrees to the River's Purple Beech, and finally 295 degrees to a big rock next to a Japanese Plum Yew. Standing on top of this rock, you will see the maw of a dead tree at 187 degrees. The arboretum letterbox is located under the far end of this tree.
