One of the primary objectives of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is to preserve the forest in the park. That’s not to say that logging wasn’t a part of the history of the Porcupine Mountains. Logging in the park happened mainly in two stages, the first being in the early 1900’s where logging near Lake Superior took place. The second wave of logging occurred around World War II, as there was an increase in demand for hardwoods. Logging is no longer allowed in the park. Campers are only allowed to take wood that is already dead and down for use in the backcountry.
Park at the Lost Creek Outpost campground off of South Boundary Road. Across the road is the beginning of the Lost Lake Trail, start there. Walk around the old fence that crosses the trail. With your back to the fence continue down the trail 19 paces (38 steps). On your left will be two white birch trees standing on “stilted” tangled roots. This box is hidden at the base of the leaning pine tree behind these two birch trees.
