Palmer-Taylor Preserve
From Portland take route 66 east for about three miles. Turn left on Middle Haddam Road and go about a quarter of a mile to the stop sign. Continue another three quarters of a mile and turn left into parking area next to a barn.
Follow orange blazes uphill behind the map board and when it splits take the right trail paralleling the road, eventually crossing the road (be careful). The trail goes straight across but on the opposite side it might be difficult to find. Continue on until you go uphill. At the top, find a large oak tree on the right side of the trail. Go left off trail approx. 10 steps to find the elephant resting between the ledge and a small tree. If you go downhill again, you've gone too far.
