SEASONAL LETTERBOX AVAILABLE MAY THROUGH OCTOBER

Did you know that the first great mining rush in the United States actually started in the Michigan’s Upper Peninsula? There wasn’t any gold located in the Porcupine Mountains but there sure was copper! Mining in the 1800’s required hand drilling and a lot of hard work. Come to find out, the copper was too expensive to be removed. There was more money being spent on the extraction than what the copper was actually worth. There were many mining locations throughout what is now the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, including Nonesuch, Cuyahoga, Carp Lake, Union and LaFayette mines. The Union Mine Interpretative trail is a one mile loop which takes the time to inform park visitors about the mining history of the Porcupine Mountains. After following this clue to your letterbox, you may want to consider stopping about 5 miles past the Union Bay Campground on M-107 and walking into the entrance of a mine.

Follow the South Boundary road to the Union Mine Interpretive parking area, park here. Take this great informative trail until you come to the interpretive sign “Along in September left the Union Mine”. With your back to the sign go straight 8 paces. Your surprise lies inside!
