Welcome to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park! The Porcupine Mountains, affectionately called the Porkies, is Michigan’s largest state park. The park covers just less than 60,000 acres and has over 90 miles of hiking trails. The park is located in two counties (Ontonagon and Gogebic) and two time zones (Eastern Standard and Central Standard). There are 47,671 acres of the park which are designated wilderness, 35,000 acres of that is old growth forest. There is much to do and see in the Porkies, including hiking, biking, camping, wild life viewing, hunting and fishing just to name a few…and, of course, letterboxing!
Upon entering the park from the east on county road 107, stop at the park entrance sign on the bay. When facing the sign turn right to face the lake and walk down to the beach. After dipping your toes in the lake, turn back around to face the road, the sign should be on your right. Your treasure is hidden under a small group of trees on the left.
