Search for the Key: Richard M Daley

Richard M Daley (son of Mayor Richard J Daley), served as the 54th Mayor of Chicago from 1989-2011. He was the longest serving Chicago mayor, and his legacy is still to be determined. He moved the city into the 21st century, and he managed to transform many areas of the city. Depending on your personal views, he was either (A) a savior who did what he needed to do to get things done or (B) a tyrant who ruled the city with an iron fist.

After his long tenure as mayor, Richard Daley decided he needed a bit of a rest and change of scenery. He decided to shy away from the city and the south side, but he couldn’t bring himself to leave Cook County. Instead, he chose a remote location with a lake and parking area that reminded him of a favorite Beatle tune.

To find Daley, walk downhill to the SW and follow the pond to the right. When you join the larger trail, go south. Depending on the recent weather, you can also get on this trail by walking west down the busy paved path, about 100 paces. Do not pass, do not pass. Continue past the pond and along the rolling, windy hills. Soon you will come to a large field. Skirt the western edge and rejoin the trail in the SW corner. As you walk SW, the trail goes up a gentle slope and, temporarily, disappears. When you hit a ‘T’ you will see another field to the right. Turn left (~200 degrees), and pass a small fort.

Right about here, Daley (and maybe you) became concerned he was going to get lost. So, as he passes a large tree on the right, he noticed a fallen tree at 240 degrees. As you continue along the path for another 35 steps, you will notice two large fallen trees on the right. Look halfway up the near side of the 1st tree near where a small side arm touches the ground to find the former Mayor’s newest retirement locale.

After carefully replacing the Mayor, retrace your steps along the trail until you reach the 2nd field. Skirt the NE edge past a connector to the other field. In the NE corner, follow the short path, and then continue N (either along the deer trail or field) until you return to the main trail (just past the NW corner).

The journey will last ~1.5 miles and take you to one of the more remote, and sparsely visited, parks in Cook County. You’ll find rolling hills alongside a peaceful lake, wide open grass fields, and faint/remote trails that may, occasionally, be challenging to follow. Depending on the season, parts of the hike will likely have bugs, mud, ticks, and even a few snakes. However, don’t worry. If this city boy could find his way, you should too! (It wouldn’t hurt to examine the trail maps in the parking lot, or find one online before you start. You’ll be heading towards the Oak Bluff area.)
