This letterbox was part of the 2011 GO and Explore Your World! program, and was available from June 1, 2011 - September 5, 2011. Stay tuned for the 5th annual GO York program, to start in June 2012. Information about the program may be found at www.goyork.org.
The GO and Explore Your World! program uses checkpoints - wooden posts with engraved plates attached to them - instead of traditional letterboxes and stamps. Please carefully rub an impression from the engraved plate into your Passport (program guide), available at any York County Library.
This letterbox is located on the Mason-Dixon Trail and can be accessed from the Lock 12 Recreation Area. It is rated "moderate" by GO York standards.
- Park in the second parking area (gravel) on right off River Road, and locate the Mason-Dixon Trail (blue and white markings).
- Pass the map on your left and follow the path down to the river.
- Cross the canal and you’ll reach a danger sign. Make sure you take all necessary precautions.
- Turn left and follow the blue markings on the tree.
- Don’t forget to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature!
- Look to your right through the trees. Can you see the Holtwood Dam?
- Start looking for the checkpoint hidden behind a tree to your left with a blue marking on it.
- Don’t forget to read about the history of the canal when you walk past.
